Dear readers,
It was Memorial Day in the USA, and Victoria Day in Canada yesterday. That means I wanted to take a break and simply send a ‘hello’.
Canada is the only country that still commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. It has been observed since 1845.
Yes, we are a country of traditions, and increasingly so because we are going back in history to include the native people that were here before we were.
It’s called, progress.
Victoria Day, known in French as Fête de la Reine (Celebration of the Queen), is a federal Canadian public holiday celebrated on the last Monday preceding May 25 to honour Queen Victoria.
There you go, it was Monday the 22nd.
Shortly after ‘the Canadas’ were united into the ‘Province of Canada’, there was an effort to create a new public holiday that, it was hoped, would unify English and French Canadians, transcending their religious and cultural differences.
To this date, its a bit of a challenge. But a small one. Increasingly small.
Because we have evolved to be impressed by what’s different.
There are French Canadians that settled in nicely throughout all of Canada. And more and more English Canadians respect the history of Québec. You just have to read about it to be in awe of the history of these lands.
A beautiful nation. Impressive landscapes. Amazing people.
While I am an immigrant, I am also Canadian. Proudly so.
So, we take a break from more commercial talk and we just say, Happy Victoria Day, which was yesterday.
Next week, I’m following up on the challenges of ChatGPT, because after all the hype, it’s time to talk about it’s future.
Wishing you all a wonderful day, and greetings from sunny Montreal.
